Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) is a program that allows former servicemembers to continue their life insurance coverage. VGLI benefits protect veterans’ dependents in the event that they pass away. While some claims are legitimately denied, many VGLI claim denials are based on errors. If you’re facing a VGLI claim denial that you believe is unfair or wrong, we can help.

Veterans of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy who had SGLI coverage may apply for VGLI within one year and 120 days of the following:

  • Release from active duty or active duty for training under a call or order to duty that does not specify a period of less than 31 days
  • Separation, retirement or release from assignment from the Ready Reserves/National Guard
  • Assignment to the Individual Ready Reserves of a branch of service or to the Inactive National Guard
  • Placement on the Temporary Disability Retirement List

Veterans are also eligible to apply for VGLI if they had part-time SGLI coverage and suffered an injury or disability on duty that rendered them “uninsurable” at standard premium rates. Eligible individuals may enroll for VGLI coverage up to equal the amount of the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage they had when they separated from service.

Why Was My VGLI Claim Denied?

There are several reasons you might have received a VGLI claim denial. Unfortunately, not all of them are legitimate. For example, the insurance company may claim that your family member was ineligible for VGLI coverage or cancelled the policy. Or, there may have been incorrect or missing information on the application. No matter the issue, no one with a legitimate VGLI claim should receive a denial.

You certainly were not expecting this issue to happen. Now, it seems that you will not receive the money you were counting on.

Don’t give up just yet. An initial denial by a life insurance company does not necessarily mean it can’t be reversed. Our attorneys at Life Insurance Law, LLC can find out why the insurer denied you and whether we can do something about it.
